What is Rhine in Flames about?

The name Rhine in Flames is apt, as it is a series of large-scale fireworks displays that take place throughout the summer on various evenings and in various cities along the Rhine. Participating cities include:

  • Bonn
  • Bingen & Rüdesheim
  • Koblenz & Spay
  • Oberwesel
  • St. Goar & St. Goarshausen

In each of the participating cities, "Rhine in Flames" is celebrated as an independent festival.

When do the events take place?

The large fireworks take place on five evenings. The first time Rhine in Flames is celebrated in May, the last annual event is held in September. Unlike other festivals, there is no fixed date for Rhine in Flames. The date of the big fireworks varies by a few days every year. The following dates are usually announced:

  • The prelude of Rhine in Flames takes place every year on the first Saturday in May between Bad Hönnigen/Bad Breisig and Bonn.
  • The second part follows on the first Saturday in July between Bingen/Rüdesheim and Niederrheimbach
  • On the second Saturday in August, the large fireworks display is shown between Spay and Koblenz.
  • On the second Saturday in September, Rhine in Flames can be admired in Oberwesel.
  • The final event takes place on the third Saturday in September between St. Goar and ST. Goarshausen takes place.

What is on offer at Rhine in Flames?

The focus of the respective event is, of course, the large fireworks display. Traditionally, the largest fireworks display is set off at "Rhine in Flames" in Koblenz. The best way for locals and visitors to experience the fireworks is from the water. There, there is an unobstructed view of the spectacular event. On the occasion of the "Rhine in Flames" event, brightly lit passenger ships sail along the Rhine in convoy. When the ships arrive at the respective event location, the fireworks are set off. A convoy includes 20 to more than 50 passenger ships, depending on the venue. In St. Goar/St. Goarshausen, the ships do not sail on the Rhine, but are moored at the berth so that passengers can easily watch the fireworks. The fireworks last on average about 50 minutes each.

However, the large fireworks display "Rhine in Flames" is by no means the only thing on offer that evening. Extensive supporting events take place at all venues. Numerous folk festivals and wine festivals are held on both banks of the Rhine, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. In Koblenz, the events lasted a whole three days last time.

Why a visit to Rhine in Flames is worthwhile

The middle Rhine Valley is already one of the most beautiful German landscapes and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in certain sections for good reason. The major event "Rhine in Flames" adds a cultural highlight to the beautiful landscape, pleasant climate and good cuisine that is second to none. The large fireworks and fringe events inspire people from all over the world.

If you are planning to take a vacation in one of the many beautiful regions along the Rhine, be sure to include a visit to the "Rhine in Flames" event. It will most likely be the highlight of your vacation. Of course, the best way to experience the event is from the ship. However, due to the high demand, it is recommended to book tickets in time, as the capacity of the ships is limited.
